UK Schools Will Introduce Gambling Education for Teens

The UK has decided to modify its education system in relation to gambling. From now on, children will be taught about the right approach to gambling activity. The local Department of Education made a decision to include gambling in the compulsory curriculum for younger generations…

More About the Program

According to the words of U.K. Schools Minister Nick Gibb, the new program will focus on gambling harms and debt-related issues. It will be part of the widely known curriculum ‘Personal, Social, Health and Economic’ (PSHE). Gibb noted:

“I want to ensure every child understands the risks, which is why we are making health education — including issues such as addiction and cumulative debt — compulsory from September.”

Similar attempts have been made by education charity Demos, which looked to introduce a two-year education project in 2018. The whole program was intended to supply students with proper education regarding risky behavior including gambling. As part of this project, about 650 teens aged 14 were taught how to “weigh risk, identify manipulative behavior, manage impulses and help others” who may have a gambling-related problem.

The pilot program gave positive results and there was a 7% decrease in the number of teens involved in some kind of gambling activities (playing cards). At the same time, there was a 3% decline in the percent of the students who confirmed some kind of engagement in four (or more) sorts of gambling activities.

New Idea

The innovative program has been proposed following the DoE study which shows that 55,000 children in the United Kingdom belong to problem gamblers, with some of them 11 years of age. According to this study, gambling is just one area that should be examined. The PSHE program will further focus on

“Equipping pupils with a sound understanding of risks and knowledge to make safe and informed decisions on adult matters related to ‘drug education, financial management, sex and relationships and the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.”

The program will also include information about available treatments for affected groups as well as assistance for gambling victims.

On this occasion, Chief executive of GambleAware, Marc Etches noted:

“Very few teenagers have been taught about the risk associated with gambling and what the signs of problem gambling are.”
