Spelinspektionen, the Swedish regulators, decided not to punish four of their licensees. These four licensees were accused of violating rules on accepting wagers on matches involving underage athletes.
The regulatory agency announced that it has concluded looking into whether four locally licensed gambling operators – Betsson, Bet365, local racing monopoly AB Trav Och Galopp (ATG) and the Kindred Group’s Spooniker subsidiary – had violated the of their license that implied accepting wagers on contests involving athlete under the legal age of 18.
Back in late April, the Swedish regulator issued a warning that some of its licensed entities had offered in-play bets on the performance of individual athletes out of which some were under the age of 18.
After a closed inspection of the invents that transpired, the conclusion was that players involved were largely over 18 years and as such, dropped its investigation of the four operators mentioned previously.
It is possible that the Swedish regulator is performing reviews of similar instances involving other licensees. Aside from the eight operators warned in July, the regulator reprehended four more in August. After not being clear on what is permissible, Gaming Innovation Group chose to shut down its Swedish-licensed sportsbook in July.
Last week, the Swedish government representatives held a meeting with local football and hockey associations where the topic of prohibiting certain types of play-in betting was discussed. More specifically, the play-in betting on the actions of an individual athlete bets were in question. The theory that eliminating such markets will reduce the possibility of match and spot-fixing emerged.
Svenska Spel’s CEO Patrik Hofbauer immediately stood behind this notion and offered his group’s for this proposed restriction stating that it should be a common goal of all gambling operators to work together against crime and cheating.
