Pennsylvania Gaming Revenue Surges to $510 Million in August

In August 2024, the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board reported a substantial increase in gaming revenue, reaching $510.1 million. This represents an impressive 11.6% year-over-year growth. The surge is driven by notable gains in both sports betting and iGaming, underscoring the state’s expanding gaming industry.

Major Contributors to Revenue Growth

Several casinos across Pennsylvania saw significant revenue increases compared to the previous year. Leading the charge was Hollywood Casino at Penn National in Grantsville, which topped the list with $87.7 million in revenue. Valley Forge Casino Resort followed with $70.8 million, while Parx Casino in Philadelphia reported $53.7 million, marking a 5.7% increase from the previous year.

The revenue from slot machines also experienced a notable rise. For instance, Parx Casino led with $32.6 million, reflecting a 1.6% increase year-over-year. Wind Creek Bethlehem followed with $25.2 million, up 3.0%, and Rivers Casino Pittsburgh posted $22.1 million, a 1.2% increase compared to August 2023.

Significant Gains in iGaming and Sports Betting

iGaming proved to be a major contributor to the overall revenue growth. The sector generated $183.7 million in August 2024, with Hollywood Casino at Rivers Casino Philadelphia also posted strong results with $30.9 million, up 9.9% from the previous year.

Sports betting revenue also saw substantial growth, contributing $30 million to the total. Valley Forge Casino Resort led with $13.3 million from a handle of $176.4 million. Hollywood Casino at the Meadows reported $7.8 million in revenue from a $124.4 million handle, while Rivers Casino Pittsburgh posted $1.9 million from a handle of $21.4 million.

Comparison to Previous Years and Future Outlook

The reported figures for August reflect a broader trend of growth in Pennsylvania’s gaming sector. Compared to August 2023, the total gaming revenue showed an 11.6% increase. The breakdown reveals that while revenue from retail slots grew by 3.9%, iGaming slots saw a significant 31.4% increase. Retail tables experienced a slight decrease of 2.08%, while iGaming tables grew by 15.87%. Sports wagering revenue surged by 36.21%, highlighting its growing popularity.
