Oregon Casinos Close to Helping Homeless Around the Region

In the Western US, the homeless crisis is always a subject of serious debate, and as such, both lawmakers and local citizens are looking for ways in to identify finanacial resources to help decrease the steadlity growing population.
The state of Oregon has an original idea of how to deal with the problem.
Wood Village Mayor T. Scott Harden has proposed a plan for casino construction, east of Portland. The casino would be used to help finance the homeless issue thanks to the additional tax revenues…
City Endevaorus
Officials in the Oregon city have made tremendous efforts to receive approval for the project. They insisted on the referendum in 2010 and 2012 which has been finalized without success. Mayor is still positive about the future and beginning of the casino construction. Mayor Harden said:
“The new major beneficiary of the dollars will be our homelessness efforts. I think in a lot of people’s minds this would get them to think. It might be the tipping point for a lot of voters.”
Behind the Initiative
At the moment, the homeless initiative is in the hands of Bruce Studer and Matt Rossman, who submitted ballot proposals on January 30 to the Oregon Secretary of State. If they receive approval, casino construction at Wood Village could start soon and the idea to homeless communities could be a step closer to realization.
Meanwhile, Oregon voters should give positive words to the ballot initiative which will cause the alteration of the constitution. Presently, the state constitution doesn’t approve privately held casinos.
Expectations
Despite lacking success with previous attempts, Mayor Harden believes in the positive outcome. He said:
“If you have a taxpaying casino that is popular, that people go to, then you are looking at permanent funding for permanent solutions to the homeless crisis.”
One of the previous initiatives has been focused on helping schools and education. However, this one is directed at ing homeless people by supplying them with necessary housing, job programs, and medicine.
One of the initiative leaders, Bruce Studer, has mentioned that the future casino would provide $100 million per year, which will be utilized both for homeless and school problems.
Homeless programs will lead to the introduction of privately owned casinos in the state, while the school-oriented project will cause the opening of the Oregon Lottery Fund. It is planned that 70% of casino funds go to homeless programs.
