Ohio Senator Introduces Bill to Legalize Online Casinos and Gaming

Ohio may soon the ranks of U.S. states allowing legal internet casino gaming, thanks to a new bill introduced by State Senator Niraj Antani. The proposed legislation aims to legalize internet-based gambling, including online poker and slot machines, widely referred to as iGaming. This move builds upon Ohio’s successful rollout of legal sports betting earlier this year.

Senator Antani’s 146-page bill, still awaiting an official bill number, will be overseen by the Ohio Casino Control Commission. This agency will be responsible for selecting licensed casino operators and vendors to offer legal online games within the state.

Ohio’s Shift Toward Digital Gaming

Ohio to a handful of states that offer online casinos.

Neighboring states like Pennsylvania, iGaming brought in $174.3 million in July 2024, ing for 35% of the state’s total gaming revenue.

Though Ohio has traditionally had conservative views on gambling, attitudes have shifted in recent years. Online sports betting was legalized in January 2023, and there is growing momentum to open up the state to online casino gaming.

In a statement, Antani highlighted Ohio’s evolving gaming industry and pointed to the success of legalized sports betting in the state as an indicator that now is the right time to embrace online casino gaming.

“As gaming has evolved in our state and we’ve seen massive success with sports betting, it’s now time to legalize iGaming in Ohio”.

According to Antani, many Ohioans live far from physical casinos and racetracks, making internet gaming a more accessible and convenient entertainment option.

Economic Potential for Ohio

Proponents argue that legalizing online casino gaming in Ohio could provide the state with significant tax revenue, similar to what is being seen in other states.

As Ohio continues to debate the expansion of its gambling laws, many lawmakers and experts see the potential for millions of dollars in new tax revenue, which could be used to fund public services and state projects.

However, given Ohio’s cautious approach to expanding gambling activities, the process may take some time, and voter approval is likely to be required.

Benefits of Legalization

If Senator Antani’s bill moves forward, Ohio could soon become one of the few states where legal internet casino gaming is available. While there will likely be challenges ahead, including opposition from conservative lawmakers, the state may be on the cusp of a major shift in its gaming industry.

States that have legalized online gambling, such as Michigan, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, have so far experienced numerous benefits. Revenue from online casinos and sports betting has bolstered state budgets, contributing to public projects and infrastructure improvements.

The regulated online gambling market has also increased consumer protections, reducing the risks of fraud and ensuring fair play. Additionally, legalized online gambling has created job opportunities in tech and customer service sectors. The legal framework has helped channel gambling activities into regulated environments, reducing illegal gambling and associated criminal activities.
