Reinforcing gambling policies within the National Basketball Association is currently a burning issue for the league after legalizing sports gambling in the United States, says Mark Tatum, deputy commissioner.
NBA’s chief operating officer has also revealed the association’s next move regarding the rising threats that came into existence with May’s Supreme Court ruling.
This refers to the increased number of so called “in-house infractions,” whose actions are plaguing every nation’s favorite sports contests. In the United Kingdom, for example, soccer, tennis and cricket are first on the list, and Spanish police recently apprehended twenty-eight ATP players involved in fixing matches.
Strict NBA rules do not allow any sort of betting, fixing, tipping nor the encouragement of people to place wagers. However, since the league and its teams now want to claim a piece of the action through sportsbooks, a more deliberate approach is required, comments Tatum:
“A lot of it has to do with education with respect to our players, with respect to our teams,” he said. “We’re spending a lot of time learning from the mistakes that were made and what we’re seeing in sports betting in places around the world.
We’re trying to educate our fans. We’re educating our players and our teams. We’re taking a little bit of a cautious approach here… generally, we think it’s a good thing for sports betting to be regulated, to be legalized, so there is better information being captured.”
In November 2018, NBA hired Sportsradar, Swiss data agency, that provides it with the information relevant to betting irregularities. Nevertheless, the league has also ed English Premier League to assist, since it represents the finest example of balancing revenues and responsibility. British stadiums are famous for combining betting outlets, as well as pitchside betting odds – this data is also live during broadcast.
Important to mention, is that the regulator has called for greater awareness, since the ments have negative impacts on society and encourage gambling addiction. In spite everything, Tatum believes that EPL’s approach represents the right choice for NBA by adding:
“That really helped inform some of our thoughts on how sports betting could work in the United States. We’re seeing a large shift now and a change in the landscape of sports betting in the U.S. We’ve gone to school on them. We’ve actually shared a lot of information with them and have a great partnership with them.”
London’s O2 Arena has recently become a hot spot for professional basketball matches as it hosted a game between Washington Wizards and New York Knicks. This match represents NBA’s promotional efforts for reaching greater exposure in the UK and other parts of Europe.

Nice strategy, the league should protect its players and this seems like the right way to do it. Hoping that the advice from EPL can make this happen.
