BetMGM Debuts Evolution's Lightning Storm in Ontario

BetMGM has launched Evolution Gaming’s latest and largest live game, Lightning Storm, exclusively in the Ontario market. This new title, hailed as Evolution’s biggest Lightning game to date, will be available through the BetMGM Casino platform across the province.

A Revolutionary Live Game Show

Lightning Storm is set in a laboratory-themed studio, creating an immersive experience that combines the excitement of a live game show with the social aspect of live dealer games. The game features a 39-segment money wheel that spins after players place their bets.

Oliver Bartlett, BetMGM Vice President of Gaming Product & Content, emphasized the significance of live dealer games for BetMGM’s iGaming business, stating, “Lightning Storm brings together the social aspect of live dealer, the excitement of a game show, and the popularity of Lightning games to create a fantastic experience for our players.”

Expanding Presence in Ontario

Both BetMGM and Ezugi launched its live casino offerings in the province.

Evolution has also made strategic acquisitions, such as the purchase of Livespins for around $7.3 million CAD, to bolster its North American presence.

Exclusive Partnership and Innovation

The exclusive debut of Lightning Storm highlights the strong partnership between BetMGM and Evolution, which spans across multiple U.S. states and Ontario. Evolution CEO Martin Carlesund praised the game, describing it as “some of our best work yet.” He noted that the development of Lightning Storm has been a long-term project aimed at delivering an unparalleled gaming experience.

Carlesund commented, “We have been working on Lightning Storm for a long time, and I dare say it’s some of our best work yet, building on so many things that we have learnt from previous games. I look forward to bringing it to players in the coming months.”

Impact on Financial Performance

Despite some challenges, such as the delay in the release date of Lightning Storm, Evolution reported strong financial performance in Q2 2024. The company achieved operating revenues of €508.4 million, a 15.3% increase from the same period in 2023, and an EBITDA increase of 10.9% to €345.8 million. The live casino segment saw an 18% year-on-year revenue growth, although the RNG segment experienced only a 2% growth.

Evolution’s flagship game, Crazy Time, contributed significantly to player payouts, distributing over €35 million to more than 5,000 players in Q2. This substantial payout, while demonstrating the game’s popularity, impacted the company’s revenue share for the period. Carlesund explained, “Large player wins are part of the game and positive for our games’ attractiveness to players, but it does affect us through lower revenue share in the period.”

The launch of Lightning Storm in Ontario marks a significant milestone for both BetMGM and Evolution. By combining innovative gameplay with an immersive live dealer experience, the two companies are set to enhance the iGaming landscape in the province. With their continued expansion and strategic partnerships, BetMGM and Evolution are poised to lead the market in delivering exceptional gaming experiences.
