Aiming to have a more complex understanding of all the challenges operators face in complying with the new code of conduct, The Belgian Gaming Commission (BGC) has launched a consultation on the ban of ments. The prohibition came into effect on June 1st of this year.
The consultations are expected to take place in mid-October, where the companies will have the chance to introduce their views and opinions on the matter. Moreover, they are invited to submit proposals and comments to the BGC.
After the country’s government noticed that online gambling ads have become omnipresent, they came up with suggestions to enhance the protection by imposing stricter rules regarding advertising.
The package of controls was initially approved in October 2018….
…but the implementation began starting June 1. What came as a rather shocking statistic is that there are more than 1m players ed with licensed operators, which motivated the Commission to ramp up protection standards.
Slots were seen as being a particularly risky form of play, which was the main reason behind the prohibition of advertising online casino games on television.
While still permitted across all channels…
…the advertising of sports betting is now heavily restricted. Commercials for sportsbooks must not be shown during live sports broadcasts. However, it is permitted to show them before and after the event starts.
In addition to this, there is also a fifteen-minute window on either side of programs aimed at children or young population during which no ads can be broadcast.
As a mandatory rule, all ads will be obliged to carry the message “Jouez avec modération” (Play in moderation). This messaging should for at least 4% of the ment space.
The operator’s website is the only place where the promotion of bonuses is allowed. Offers to reimburse punters for losses are prohibited as well.
Furthermore, consumers who have adjusted a weekly spending cap of €500 per week, will now be able to reduce it with immediate effect. Nevertheless, they may request to increase their spending limit three days before this is implemented. As a part of the approval process, more stringent credit check will be carried out.
Provided they confirm their attendance by October 11th…
…operators will be given a unique opportunity to give their opinion to the sub-commission handling the consultation. The event is scheduled for October 15th.
Moreover, interested parties are free to send their comments and suggestions to the Belgian Gaming Commission by October 4th.

It’s good that they are eager to hear opinions from the other side, perhaps that can help in finding the best solution to make all sides content. And what’s even more important, protect the players even more.
