Alberta Gaming, Lottery and Cannabis (AGLC) has officially launched its first Play Alberta app, marking a significant development for sports bettors in the province. After experiencing a minor delay, the app is now live and available for on both Apple and Android devices, offering an initial focus on sports betting.

Phased Rollout of Features

The Play Alberta app will introduce new features in phases, starting with a comprehensive sportsbook. Players can currently bet on over 50 sports and leagues, including popular options like the NHL, NFL, NBA, MLB, and CFL. This first phase mirrors the existing sports betting features available on the PlayAlberta.ca website.

According to AGLC’s Executive Vice President of Business Development, Steve Lautischer, the new app is designed to enhance the experience, allowing bettors to access Alberta-specific markets and ensuring the security of their personal and financial information. “Mobile sports betting continues to evolve for Play Alberta with our new app, available to Apple and Android s, that optimizes their experience while accessing our product,” Lautischer stated.

The next phase of the app, expected to be released in the first half of 2025, will incorporate additional gaming options, including online casino games, lotteries, instant games, and live dealer products. This gradual expansion will help AGLC provide a comprehensive gaming platform for its s.

Security and Responsible Gaming at the Core

A key feature of the Play Alberta app is its focus on security and responsible gambling. It integrates the responsible gaming tools from PlayAlberta.ca, such as the GameSense and Self-Exclusion programs. Play Alberta is the only regulated online gaming platform currently available in Alberta, and it has captured approximately 45% of the province’s gaming market, according to recent estimates by H2 Gambling Capital. The rest of the market remains dominated by grey market sites and apps, which have been available to Albertans for years. The new Play Alberta app aims to increase this market share by offering secure, regulated options with a focus on local preferences.

AGLC’s move to launch a mobile app comes as the province prepares for potential competition from private operators.
